Probability Measures with given Marginals and Conditionals: I-projections and Conditional Iterative Proportional Fitting

The iterative proportional fitting procedure (IPF-P) is an algorithm to compute approximately probability measures with prescribed marginals. We propose two extensions of the IPF-P, called conditional iterative proportional fitting procedures (CIPF-P), so that, additionally, given conditional distributions are taken into account. This modification is carried out by using the geometrical interpr...

Iterative Conditional Fitting for Gaussian Ancestral Graph Models

Ancestral graph models, introduced by Richardson and Spirtes (2002), generalize both Markov random fields and Bayesian networks to a class of graphs with a global Markov property that is closed under conditioning and marginalization. By design, ancestral graphs encode precisely the conditional independence structures that can arise from Bayesian networks with selection and unobserved (hidden/la...

Iterative Conditional Fitting for Estimation of a Covariance Matrix with Zeros

We consider estimation of the covariance matrix of a random vector under the constraint that certain elements in the covariance matrix are zero. Assuming that the random vector follows a multivariate normal distribution, in which case the model is also known as covariance graph model, we present a new algorithm for maximum likelihood estimation of the covariance matrix with zero pattern. We giv...

Fitting Second-order Models to Mixed Two-level and Four-level Factorial Designs: Is There an Easier Procedure?

Fitting response surface models is usually carried out using statistical packages to solve complicated equations in order to produce the estimates of the model coefficients. This paper proposes a new procedure for fitting response surface models to mixed two-level and four-level factorial designs. New and easier formulae are suggested to calculate the linear, quadratic and the interaction coeff...

On an Interval-Valued Solution of the Marginal Problem

In the 1980s, a version of a marginal problem considered in this paper was connected, with the necessity to cope with a task of knowledge integration in probabilistic expert systems. In practical situations, marginal distributions representing pieces of local knowledge are often inconsistent. The present paper introduces an interval-valued solution, which always exists, of a marginal problem ev...
